Abstract

Pak-Afghan relations have long been characterized by a multifarious interplay of political, defense and security challenges. These neighboring countries share a porous border that has often served as a conduit for the movement of militants and refugees. Security challenges in the region have been exacerbated by the presence of various insurgent groups, including the Taliban, which has found sanctuary in the border regions. Pakistan has been accused of providing support to some of these groups, further straining its relationship with Afghanistan. Additionally, historical and cultural factors, as well as disputes over border delineation, have contributed to the tense nature of their bilateral relations. However, this approach has also led to accusations of Pakistan supporting insurgent groups within Afghanistan, which has strained their relations. In recent years, both countries have made efforts to improve their ties and address common security concerns. An effective defense strategy for both nations must involve cooperation, border management, and efforts to counter cross-border terrorism to enhance stability in the region and ensure their mutual security interests. Addressing these security
challenges and improving their relationship remains critical for the stability and development of
the wider South Asian region. This study examine the Pak-Afghan relations in the context of
security, defense, militant refugees challenges and points out how these challenges can be
overcome by diplomatic ties.
